Against Generative AI

Against Generative AI

I’ve been saving links about the problems with, and flaws within, generative AI for some time. Here’s a selection of links (necessarily incomplete!) to which I’ll keep adding as new work appears.  (You may find an item linked in more than one category; this means it applies to more than one of the themes I’ve outlined below.) To lead off, a thought-provoking quote from Charlie Warzel in The Atlantic:

“What if the real doomer scenario is that we pollute the internet and the planet, reorient our economy and leverage ourselves, outsource big chunks of our minds, realign our geopolitics and culture, and fight endlessly over a technology that never comes close to delivering on its grandest promises?”

10 thoughts on “Against Generative AI”

  1. Just wanted to say how helpful it is to have all these links in 1 place! Thank you as always, Cate!

  2. I have a number of articles about or touching on Gen AI in my LinkedIn newsletter “Events, Data, and Information” (https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/7173310209363197952/).
Being a newsletter, the articles are a bit like personal notes. But they have a direction

The most technical would be this – “Data In, Data Out: Sustainable LLMs?”
    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/data-out-sustainable-llms-chris-despopoulos-rxjyf/

And try “AI and Jobs: Why Not Replace Executives?”:
    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ai-jobs-why-replace-executives-chris-despopoulos-odjif/

  3. This essay is an extended critique of AI in higher education that connects it to the general state of affairs in which public goods became commodities and public universities are turning into little more than workforce suppliers for the private sector.
Citation: Ronald Purser, “AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself”, Current Affairs, December 2025
    Link: https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/ai-is-destroying-the-university-and-learning-itself

  4. Thanks for listing my article “Guest Post — The Ghost in the Machine: Why Generative AI is a Crisis of Authorship, Not Just a Tool” on your blog Cate!

I would direct the readers’ attention to my another significant work “Guest Post — Re-imagining Scholarly Integrity: The “Continuum of Consensus” Quality Control System”. Please read and enjoy:
